COMMUNITY ART IN THE VOID DECK: A STUDY ON PAINTED MURALS IN VOID DECKS AND THEIR RELATIONS TO RESIDENTS' SENSE OF BELONGING
(2014-05-30) GOH SOK HUI MAY; ARCHITECTURE; CHO IM SIK
The void deck is one form of public space formally introduced in the new communities that is Housing and Development Board (HDB) New Towns back in the 1970s. Over the years, it has undergone several transformations to suit society’s changing needs. One form of transformation that has occurred since the 1980s is the appearance of painted murals on the walls of these HDB void decks. These painted murals have since evolved into larger-scaled community art works. Hence, this research paper seeks to unveil and critically review the relationship between void deck and community art in a community setting: Are void decks public spaces that accommodate and promote mural painting? In return, does the presence of painted murals in public spaces such as void decks enhance the HDB community’s sense of belonging? Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies will be undertaken for this research study.
