Publication A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF VENTILATION RATES ON THE PERCEPTIONS, SBS SYMPTOMS AND CONCENTRATION OF ASTHMATIC AND HEALTHY PEOPLE(2010-11-03) LIM JIA HUI; BUILDING; THAM KWOK WAIVentilation rates is a key aspect of providing for a comfortable and safe indoor environment, which indirectly affects productivity at the workplace. Extensive studies have been done to explore the effects of ventilation rates on the typical (healthy) office worker, but in the process of doing so, the needs of another fraction of the workforce has been neglected. There is a pressing need to look into how differently mildly asthmatic people in the workforce are affected by a change in ventilation rates, compared to a healthy office worker. Time of exposure is also studied in relation to how it affects the extent of effects brought about by a change of ventilation rates. This dissertation attempts to examine the impact of ventilation rates on the perceptions, Sick Building Syndrome symptoms and concentration of healthy and asthmatic people through a blind intervention study, comprising of 2 separate groups of subjects. Subjective, in the form of a survey questionnaire, and objective, in the form of performance tests, assessments were administered in a controlled Field Environmental Chamber. Findings indicate that: 1) the subjects perform better at a higher ventilation rate; 2) asthmatic people reported a greater improvement in scores than their healthy counterparts when ventilation rate is increased; and 3) effects of ventilation rate became more pronounced with respect to prolonged time of exposure. The recognition of a difference in requirements between healthy and asthmatic people allows for the latter’s needs to be provided for at the workplace. Future research involving a larger sample size and/or another type of sensitive group is recommended.Publication THE TRANSFORMATION OF QUANTITY SURVEYORS � JOB FUNCTIONS THROUGH THE ADOPTION OF BIM(2020-06-03) LIM JIA HUI; BUILDING; LING YEAN YNG FLORENCEBuilding Information Modelling (BIM) has been prevalent in the industry for many years. However, the adoption of BIM in the Singapore construction industry is not significantly high. Various studies were done with regards to the adoption of BIM in Singapore, but those studies focused on architects and contractors’ perceptions, and quantity surveyors were rarely involved. The quantity surveying profession may be lagging in the implementation of BIM. Therefore, it is important to identify the various barriers and obstacles that are preventing BIM adoption by quantity surveyors. In the context of consultant quantity surveyors, the objectives of this research are to: evaluate the effectiveness of BIM; determine the acceptance and usage level of BIM; assess the extent of change expected with the use of BIM. Based on the findings, recommendations on how to improve BIM adoption within the quantity surveying profession are proposed. A survey questionnaire was sent out to the local quantity surveyors and a total of 53 responses were gathered. The respondents who were mainly consultant QS perceived that BIM would be beneficial to them especially for measurement related processes and the barriers of BIM adoption was also identified. The cost no doubt remains an underlying problem for the adoption of BIM. Some recommendations to increase BIM adoption are to have proper training options, accreditation to encourage learning, having proper BIM platform for enhanced collaboration and proper BIM standards that address the fundamental problems of legal responsibility and standardization within the industry.
