Publication EFFECTS OF RELIGIOUS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS ON HELP-SEEKING ATTITUDES(2020-04-19) ABDUL ROQIBU; PSYCHOLOGY; SIM TICK NGEEThis study examined the effects of religious affiliation, religious commitment, public stigma and self-stigma on an individual’s attitudes towards seeking psychological help. A total of 141 Singapore undergraduates completed an online questionnaire comprising of questions measuring the variables of interest. Results indicated that there were no significant differences amongst participants with or without a religious affiliation. Simple mediation analyses indicated that the indirect effects of public stigma on help- seeking attitudes through self-stigma were significant. Lastly, moderated mediation analyses revealed that the model was not significant, indicating that moderated mediation effects were not supported in this study. It also revealed that some support for the interaction between self-stigma and religious commitment and their effect on help- seeking attitudes was found. Results indicated that the link between self-stigma and help-seeking attitudes become stronger as religious commitment increased. These findings highlight the need to consider religious variables when the effects of psychological variables on help-seeking attitudes are examined.
