Abstract: This paper discusses the OSI addressing principles and implementation strategies for interconnected heterogeneous local area networks. The addressing capabilities of seven layers are analysed and demonstrated using a general gateway model. The relationship between names and addresses is discussed, based on the new X.500 directory service. To enhance the understanding, the association of N-service primitive and N-protocol address information is illustrated with a typical transmitted frame traversing through protocol layers. © 1990.
