Abstract: The room temperature visible photoluminescence was reported from undoped ZnS nanoparticle thin films embedded in SiO2 matrices. After annealing there was a blueshift of PL which increased with increasing sample annealing. The mechanism of PL and its blueshift was found to be due to the S vacancies and the formation of ZnS(O2 -) in the surface layers of the nanoparticles adjacent to the SiO2.
