Abstract: A method is proposed to determine the elastic constants of tetragonal crystals from measured velocities of ultrasonic waves. The optimization procedure is based on minimizing Z = ∑n j=1y2 j where yj is the secular determinant obtained from Christoffel's equations. Such a criterion offers a direct measure of the accuracy of the calculated elastic constants viz-a-viz the experimental wave velocities. The method is applied to strontium molybdate. © 1989.
