Abstract: The effect of foreign particles on the growth and surface instability of growing crystals was analyzed using a heterogeneous two dimensional nucleation model. The occurrence of foreign particles on the surface of growing crystals serves as a precursor for heterogeneous 2D nucleation. A needlelike pattern of surface instability caused by solid particle induced growth was observed for the naphthalene crystals grown from the melt.
