Abstract: The syntheses of two square-planar complexes [MCl{(Ph2PCH2CH2)2SO}ClO4 (M = Pd or Pt) have been achieved. X-ray crystal structure analysis of the platinum(II) complex reveals that the tridentate ligand coordinates to platinum via its phosphorus and sulphur donor atoms resulting in the formation of two five-membered chelate rings. A similar structure is assigned to the palladium(II) analogue by spectroscopic studies. Oxygen-metal bonds are not involved in these complexes. © 1994.
