Abstract: A study of a type of ultrasonic linear motor using single-layer piezoelectric actuators has been made. In the present work, derivations have been carried out to obtain the mathematical formulae for the generalized bending force and generalized longitudinal force. These formulae make it possible for us to obtain an insight into the effect of different electrical control inputs on elliptic motion, which directly affects the moving characteristics of the motor. They also greatly facilitate improvement in design and offer the theoretical basis for the sizing and placement of actuators. After the establishment of this mathematical model, a prototype has been fabricated and the characteristics have been measured. A speed of up to 100 cm s-1 has been achieved. The stabilized working speed reaches 52 cm s-1.
