Abstract: The transition of akaganeite (β-FeOOH) nanospindles to hematite (αFe 2O 3) submicron/micro-particles has been studied through a facile surfactant-free hydrothermal method at 140°C. Single crystal α-Fe 2O 3 submicron particles and β-FeOOH nanospindles or nanorods can be controllably fabricated by simply changing the experimental parameters. The mechanism of the phase transition is proposed based on the experimental results.
