Abstract: Magnesium-based composite reinforced by Mg2Si in-situ formed via mechanical milling process has been investigated. Characterization of mechanical properties revealed that an increase in the amount of Si in Mg and mechanical milling duration led to an increase in yield and ultimate tensile strengths. The increase in the mechanical properties is associated with the formation of Mg2Si and refinement of microstructure. Microstructural analyses showed that the strengthening mechanisms were due to the dispersion strengthening of fine Mg2Si particulates in the matrix as well as oxide dispersed particulates formed during mechanical milling. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
