Abstract: The magnetic properties and recording performance of highly oriented (HOR) longitudinal media are systematically studied via micromagnetic simulation. It was found that highly oriented longitudinal media could be achieved by controlling the anisotropy axes distribution. The effect of anisotropy constant, saturated magnetization and exchange coupling constants on the hysteresis loops are presented. It was further found that highly oriented media show an ultra-low transition noise. Another interesting observation made was that increasing Ms for the HOR media decreases the coercivity, which suggests practical usage of this media with current head field. A 500Gbit/in2 recording media is simulated to support the application of the highly oriented longitudinal media for ultra high density recording. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
