Abstract: Interfacial failure of the bonded aluminum composites affected by water has been investigated. The aluminum oxide/epoxide and aluminum hydroxide/epoxide interfaces were foud to be equally strong and stable at normal conditions. But the latter was more susceptible to interactions with water than the former resulting in drastic reduction in strength. The general failure mechanisms for aluminium/polymer composites are discussed in respect to water plasticization, hydrolytic degradation and modifications of the aluminium/oxide or aluminium/hydroxide interface.
