Abstract: The solid-state structures of 1,2-dicyano-1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane and cyanodiphenylmethyl peroxide are determined by X-ray crystallography. Both molecules adopt the trans conformation in the solid-state. Experimentally derived values of the energy difference between the gauche and trans rotamers and their population quotient are compared with values predicted by semiempirical MO calculations.
