Abstract: A solar-powered road surveillance system and wireless transmission of the image of the speeding vehicles that can be implemented at suitable locations without requiring main power supply wiring is presented. The system consists of one fixed USB camera that captures the frames, a digital signal processor (DSP) chip that is used to estimate the speed of the vehicles with image processing techniques. It also consist three solar panels used to provide electricity and charge the batteries, and an RF transmission system that transmits the license plate of the speeding vehicle to a nearby traffic center or police station. The two different image processing techniques have been used to estimate the speed of the vehicles that include background subtraction and inter-frame difference techniques. The proposed system operates on a two-lane road using a USB camera to perform its tasks with the camera fixed to a pole monitoring the traffic in the outgoing direction.
