Abstract: Sensors based on plastic optical fibres have received significant attention for various applications in engineering. This paper illustrates some applications of plastic optical fibre sensors in civil engineering, in particular their use in structural health monitoring. Here, a brief overview of their current development and challenges in their implementation in the field will be presented. Finally some remarks on potential future research will be outlined.
