Abstract: Simplified reliability-based design (RBD) equations are developed that are suitable for transmission line structure and similar foundations. Two formats, Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Multiple Resistance Factor Design (MRFD), are calibrated rigorously using the First-Order Reliability Method to produce designs that achieve a known level of reliability consistently. Based on comparisons with existing designs, target reliability indices of 3.2 and 2.6 are proposed for ultimate and serviceability limit states respectively. Illustrative drilled shaft design calculations are given using these formats.
