Abstract: This paper describes the experiment work done to investigate the rapid pullout behaviour of soil nail embedded in dry clean sand. In rapid pullout test, the head of test nail was loaded by an impulse tensile load and its resultant load displacement behaviour was then compared to that of corresponding quasi static test. The results of test with rough nail and smooth nail are presented in this paper. The experimental results on rough nail reveal that the 'actual' damping coefficient in the pre-peak region was a displacement dependent parameter that decreases with pullout displacement. The softening of pullout load in post-peak region of rapid pullout test was more 'drastic' than that of a quasi static test. The results on smooth nail reveal that zero damping effect was mobilized in the rapid pullout test. Copyright ASCE 2006.
