Abstract: In this paper, a novel liquid lens design is presented, in which a diffractive surface with an aspherical phase contour, combined with the spherical-like refractive surface, is adopted to improve the inherent chromatic and spherical aberration performance when compared to conventional pure refractive-type configurations. Single-point diamond turning together with soft lithography is used to realize this structure. Both simulation and test measurement results agree well with each other and demonstrate significantly improved chromatic and spherical aberration within the tunable range of the lens. © 2011 Copyright Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
