Abstract: The maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation of carrier phase for BPSK in AWGN is considered. The solution is a decision-aided (DA) ML estimator for high SNR and a (non-decision-aided) NDA ML estimator for low SNR. The DA ML estimator leads to a simple, totally linear receiver structure which involves no VCO. The phase tracking and error probability performance of this receiver is analyzed. Even the effects of past decision errors on current system performance can be assessed. The NDA ML estimator is shown to be equivalent to the common carrier loops.
