Abstract: The reduced-basis finite element method for torque optimization of small spindle motors was discussed. An HDD spindle motor was used for the computation of cogging torque as a function of various magnet radial thicknesses and pitch angles. The computation of combinations that minimizes the cogging effect as a design variable was also presented.
