Abstract: A new technique for the optimisation of designs has been applied for the determination of a spindle motor design in relation to its cogging torque. The methodology of the formulation has been described. This procedure has been used to optimise design parameters of a spindle motor. Results show clearly the advantage of using reduced order formulation over a direct Finite element application to such optimisation work.
