Abstract: The performance of high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) is known to suffer from the lightning impulsive noise. In this paper, the characteristics of lightning interference in range, Doppler and spatial domain are analyzed and a new Doppler-domain cancellation scheme based on adaptive beamforming is proposed. The new scheme has no special requirement for the distribution of ocean/ground clutter in range-Doppler map and therefore is more preferable in practical HFSWR environments. © 2006 IEEE.
