Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel filter bank architecture based on a frequency response masking design for variable bandwidth systems. The proposed method is shown to provide a greatly reduced complexity and delay for designs with sharp transition widths, compared to the conventional octave filter banks. Furthermore, the proposed architecture allows for greater flexibility in defining the bandwidths of each channel by combining channels with smaller bandwidths, and is also able to accommodate arbitrary decimation factors and is suitable for oversampled or critically-sampled systems. A 5-channel design example is provided in which we used a multiplierless design for the masking subfilters. © 2006 IEEE.
