Abstract: This paper considers the elastic buckling of skew Mindlin plates under shear loads. Two kinds of shear loads-rectangular shear (R-shear) and skew shear (S-shear)-have been investigated. The former has every infinitesimal rectangular element under pure shear while the latter refers to a shear load uniformly applied along the edges. Based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method, new critical shear load factors and buckling mode shapes for these two types of loads have been computed and tabulated for various aspect ratios, thickness-width ratios, skew angles and boundary conditions. The critical load values are significantly affected by the direction of stresses. For R-shear loads, the lower value of critical shear load is when the direction of the shear stresses tends to increase the skewness of the plate. On the other hand, for S-shear loads, the lower value of the critical load is when the direction of the shear stresses tends to decrease the plate skewness. © 1995.
