Abstract: In this paper, the actuation force of shape memory alloy (SMA) springs is employed to enhance the structural stability of flexible columns. Based on three application modes of SMA springs, these actuation forces are simplified as a pair of concentrated push-forces at both ends of the spring. The governing equations of vibration for columns are used to obtain the critical buckling load via the static-kinematic approach. Parametric studies are performed with the variation in the location and length of the SMA spring using a numerical investigation. The results indicate that the SMA spring is potentially most effective at the maximum slope location of the buckled mode shape. An experimental investigation was also performed to validate the integrity of the proposed system. A good comparison was observed between the numerical and experimental results. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
