Abstract: A substructure approach is presented for solving dynamic soil-structure interaction problems involving embedded or underground structures in a viscoelastic soil medium. The excitation considered is incident plane P and SV waves. The wave functions expansion analytical method and the collocation technique numerical method are used, respectively, to satisfy the governing wave equations and the boundary conditions at some selected points. An impedance matrix is obtained which depends on the geometry of the embedded structures and soil conditions. Superstructures such as buildings, if any, are readily included in the final stage of the formulation. Two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed procedure. © 1995 Academic Press. All rights reserved.
