Abstract: This paper proposes a multilevel fuzzy power system stabiliser (FPSS) for damping power system low-frequency oscillations. It investigates the design and implementation of a master-slave fuzzy power system stabiliser (MSFPSS) designed to provide optimal performance at all operating conditions. The paper also proposes a simple off-line training algorithm known as the table lookup scheme [9] for the proposed power system stabiliser. The training set is created using a set of the conventional power system stabiliser's (PSS) dynamic response. The parameters for the conventional PSS were tuned using a well-established pole-placement algorithm [1] for a defined operating condition. The proposed FPSS and a scheme of universal FPSS are then trained against the conventional PSS on a single-machine infinite-bus power system model. A Simulink/MATLAB model [6] was developed for conducting simulation studies on the proposed scheme. From the simulation results, the MSFPSS conclusively demonstrates itself to be far more superior and robust compared to the other schemes of power system stabilisation in its use as a form of supplementary excitation control in suppressing low-frequency electromechanical oscillations. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
