Abstract: This paper examines the possibility of using several mesh refinement techniques with the finite element method in electron optics. The methods of extrapolation, unstructured and structured mesh refinement are examined and compared with one another for some simple test potential distributions. The study shows that structured mesh refinement in combination with Richardson's extrapolation method gives the most accurate results.
