Abstract: Oblique elastic-plastic impact between rough cylinders that deform in plane strain is examined using a lumped parameter representation for the compliance of the contact region. Comparison is made with results obtained using a finite element program, DYNA2D. The tangential components of compliance and force are noted to have no influence on the normal components for the normal relative impact velocity less than that required to generate uncontained plastic deformation, i.e. in this range of impact speeds, friction has no effect on the energy absorbed by plastic deformation. For a collision between elastic-plastic bodies, the loss of kinetic energy during the collision depends on energy lost through wave propagation, friction and work of plastic deformation. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
