Abstract: Mild steel specimens were subjected to fast-rate compressive loading at 93 K and deformation twins were produced. A statistical study was then carried out on the directions of the twins observed on a section perpendicular to the direction of loading. It was found that many twins were initiated at ferrite grain boundaries by the stresses associated with the termination at these boundaries of twins in the grains on the other side of the boundaries. In contrast, only a relatively small number of twins terminating at grain boundaries did not initiate twin formation on the other side of the boundaries. © 1991.
