Abstract: The film grammar used in movie-making industry dictates that most story units start with an establishment shot, which has the intention of bringing the audience to a new environment. Identification of establishment shots can aid in scene segmentation and video summarization. This paper describes a retrieval system that is capable of detecting establishment shots using camera motion features. Experimental results on several hours of real video data show the potential of our approach.
