Abstract: The correlation between thermal stability and structural properties of ultrathin single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) was studied. A systematic quantum chemical calculation was carried out for the study of the nanotubes. The heat of formation was described as a function of tube diameter, which predicted a that SWCNTs with lower limit of 0.341 nm in diameter were experimentally observable. The zigzag tube and armchair tube were found to exhibit different geometric properties under tube curving strain.
