Abstract: Male genetically hypercholesterolemic (RICO) and normocholesterolemic (RAIF) rats were divided into four groups and each group was fed one of the following diets for 10 weeks: a standard diet (STD); STD supplemented with tannic acid (STD + T); a high fat diet (HFD) and a high fat diet with tannic acid (HFD + T). The RAIF and RICO rats when fed on HFD + T showed beneficial changes in serum lipids compared to the rats fed HFD. The lipid parameters between the groups fed STD and STD + T in both strains were unchanged. The possible modes of hypocholesterolemic action of tannic acid in these rats is discussed.
