Abstract: Characteristics of structural lightweight concrete under short-term loading are not well understood due to limited information available in current literature. Insufficient understanding considerably affects the analysis and design of lightweight concrete structural members. In addition, design procedures and code specifications can not be further improved. This study aims to provide additional understanding on the characteristics by conducting a series of experimental program. Types of concrete are plain concrete, confined concrete, and fiber-reinforced concrete. The characteristics include deformation capacity, compressive strength, concrete strain, modulus of elasticity, stress-strain characteristic, splitting tensile strength, unit weight and failure manner. Additional understanding gained from the study would be beneficial in analysis and design of structural lightweight concrete memebers.
