Abstract

This thesis explores the use of the elements of ?fun? in designing Chinese language textbooks for teaching Chinese as a second language. This exploration is an important contribution to Chinese textbook writing. Chapter 1 states the motivations and aims of the study, as well as the research questions and assumptions. Chapter 2 is a literature review of research work done on using ?fun? in designing Chinese language teaching materials. Chapter 3 explains the concept of ?fun? in language teaching materials and the framework to analyze this concept. This is done by integrating J. S. Bruner?s theories of Surprise, Spiral Curriculum and Language Acquisition Support System. Chapter 4 applies Bruner?s theories to two series of child?s textbooks. Chapter 5 concludes with a summary, provides suggestions and possible future development of ?fun? in textbook design.
