Abstract: Many researchers have envisaged that ubiquitous computing would lead to the development of smart ambient that would greatly improve people?s daily living experience. This dissertation addresses two open issues in this area: (i) the provision and discovery of services in mobile ubiquitous environments, especially those services to be hosted on mobile portable devices; (ii) the development of ubiquitous applications, namely the process of embedding context-awareness into the application design. The main deliverable and achievements of this thesis can be summarized as follow: (i) the proposal of an advanced framework for the provision, discovery and development of ubiquitous services and applications; (ii) the proof of the design concept of the proposed framework through simulation study and prototyping; and (iii) the integration of the prototype to an existing middleware with an extended architecture and the demonstration of its enhanced capability through the design and development of a ubiquitous application.
