Abstract: We use the bit error outage probability as a new performance measure in the design of an actual feedback power control system. Our design addresses the effect of imperfect channel state information (CSI), which is missed in previous works. In the second part of our work, we derive the maximal likelihood (ML) destination receiver for a general decode-and-forward multiple relay system with imperfect CSI at all receiving nodes. The derived ML receiver applies to an arbitrary M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation. The performance of the ML detector is analyzed with binary phase shift keying, where useful closed-form results are obtained. Since the availability of CSI is crucial in practice, we consider CSI acquisition and propose a control parameter-free step-size adjustment algorithm for the weights adaptation of an LMS filter. The effectiveness of the new algorithm is demonstrated through an application to channel estimation.
