Abstract

Abstract Middle construction in modern Chinese has always been a controversial topic. Though researchers made lots of discussion on the following aspects : the grammatical features of middle construction, the standards of definating the middle construction and the composition and toletation to each other, but there are still some questions not to solve well or need to research deeply. Viewed from the present studies, it is hard to make a breakthrongh if we keep studying middle construction as this kind of sentence, which is ?NP(patient) +V-qilai +(ADV) +AP/VP??For traditional linguists, descriptive and comparative analysis are important to find the difference an similaritiesis of middle construction between English and Chinese. And it is much more important to find the features of Chinese middle construction. Thus, this thesis will discuss what is typical case of Chinese middle construction and the defination, the semantic and syntax features. Based on the previous study, this thesis will analysis the Chinese middle construction, which means this kind of sentences: ?NP(patient)+ADV+V?. Several impprtant constructions in modern Chinese are not isolated to each other, even if they do not have more phological makers to indicate the internal relationship. Sometimes, relations can be found through the observation on the lexical makers or the consistency of syntax and semantics among the structure. The goal of this thesis is to make a deep anaylsis on Chinese middle construction (including the grammatical features, the semantic features and the defination of typical middle construction). 7 This thesis comprises six parts: The beginning part is the introduction which leads to four major issues: the defination and structure rule of Chinese middle construction; the feature of compositions in middle construction; the semantic features and the generated rules of middle construction. Chapter one is the introduction of research background. The review discusses mainly in two fields: one is English middle construction (including the defination, the semantics and grammatical features); the other is Chinese middle construction (including three kinds of strctures: V-qilai, Gei-VP and Nan/Yi Structure ). Chapter two explore the defination and the standards of Chinese middle construction, which is ?NP(patient)+ADV+V?. In this chapter, the classification of Chinese middle construction also be discussed. Chapter three dicusses the compositions of ?NP(patient)+ADV+V? and the features of NP, ADV and Verb in the middle construction. Chapter four deals with dicusses the semantic features of ?NP(patient)+ADV+V?, which provides strong evidence that there are some common features that in middle construction. Chapter five deals with two problems, including the grammatical feathers and the generated rules of each kinds of middle construction. Chapter six is the conclusion and summarization.
