从逸民到隐逸 : 汉、魏、两晋拒仕现象研究 = To Serve Or Not To Serve: Recluses of the Han-Wei and Jin Periods

Abstract

Discussions about Reclusion seldom explain its origins. Although attempts have been made to identify the root cause of its formation, it is usually attributed primarily to external factors related to the government - the official recommendatory system or the literati¿s reaction against political disorder, for example. This thesis, however, argues that it was shifting paradigms and changing outlooks on life amongst the intellectuals that account for the growing number of recluses. Further, it also examines their thoughts and beliefs and identifies their origins. As scholars focus on different aspects of family background, living conditions, economic status, education and everyday lives of the recluses, their understanding of the recluses¿ traits and ways of life varies and is even contradictory. To provide a more accurate picture, this thesis will probe into all the afore-mentioned aspects, and give a holistic representation of their characteristics and lifestyles.
