Abstract: In this work, we are interested in simulating the interaction between fluid and solid when the fluid flow is compressible and the structure may suffer elastic and plastic deformation. The key method that is developed is named as Ghost Solid-Fluid Method (GSFM). GSFM for 1D FSI solves a Riemann problem at the interface to get the interfacial status which takes account of the material non-linearity for plastic loading and is able to resolve the repeated shock loading on the interface. The GSFM for 2D FSI is an extension of the existing SMGFM (Xie (2005)). The numerical experiments show that the GSFM results (strictly for the coupled variables, e.g. pressure, normal velocity and normal stress) matches with the analytical solutions, especially when the wave propagation is in either of the coordinate directions. The present method is shown to have limitations when the fluid-structure interface is inclined to the reference coordinate directions.
