Abstract: Hong Ying is known to be a creative and unique woman writer in contemporary China. Her difficult life has resulted in her discontentment with the injustice and oppression in life. However, she is by nature also optimistic. Her fiction therefore engenders a rebellious yet hopeful philosophy about life. As Hong Yinga??s works are to a large extent neglected by current literary critics, this dissertation aims to investigate her fictional world in order to draw more critica??s attention to her work. It attempts to point out the rebellious yet hopeful life attitude in her works through analysis and evaluation of her personality and her fictional world. The dissertation is divided into three parts. The first part sketches Hong Yinga??s life experience. The second part traces her concerns for an ideal life. The subsequent part discusses the textual means by which Hong Ying has adopted to present her rebellious yet hopeful attitudes.
