Abstract: i? i? i? i? i? i? i? Buddhist political ideology was first founded and implemented by King Asoka in India, and was first transmitted to China around the middle of second century A. D. Before Sui Yangdia??s (604i?-618) implementation of the Buddhist political ideology, many Chinese emperors had already implemented it to rule their states. i? i? i? i? i? i? i? From the cases of Chinese implementation, we notice that Buddhist political ideology was further developed into several types after King Asoka. These types include the Gandhara tradition, the Devaraja tradition and the Buddharaja tradition. i? i? i? i? i? i? This thesis is a study of Sui Yangdia??s implementation of the Buddharaja tradition. The emperor started implementing the Buddharaja tradition soon after he came to throne. In his implementation, the emperor : (1) identified himself with BuddharA?ja Maitreya; (2) received the rituals of consecration from Buddhist monks; and (3) like other Buddhist rulers (cakaravartins), he ordained monks, made Buddhist images and built stupas (temples) for the purpose of promoting Buddhism.
