Abstract: In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs), nodes have dual roles: end terminals and packet relays. Using a typical routing protocol such as Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), network connectivity is ensured on the assumption that nodes cooperate. However, the network is vulnerable to routing misbehavior due to faulty or selfish nodes. We proposed the METEOR protocol that works as an add-on enhancement on top of any reactive hop-based routing protocol such as AODV to mitigate such problems. METEOR tackles the problems via four aspects: detection, aid-data-rerouting, isolation and redemption. The objective is to emphasize to nodes that being uncooperative in the routing process is unfavorable but yet allow them to re-enter the network if they show repentance. The performance of METEOR-fortified AODV is compared against regular, defenseless-AODV to demonstrate the benefits of METEOR.
