ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This thesis applies various theories of fiction to the analysis of modern Chinese lyric fictiona??a new type of literature that creates the mood of poetry in the form of a novel. It argues that modern Chinese lyrical fiction not only adopts expressional skills of lyrical poetry but employs literary devices that are usually exclusively applicable to poetry. Writers of lyrical fiction combine the simultaneity of lyrical poetry with the continuity of time, making lyrical fiction an art that integrates time with space. With an analysis of Yu Dafu, Fei Ming, and Shen Congwena??s works, this study indicates that modern Chinese lyrical fiction contains the following features. First, it reveals the inner world of the narrator or leading characters. Second, the poetic mood is created through the writera??s application of poetrya??s simultaneity and spaciousness to fiction. Third, abundant scenery descriptions in these novels often become literary images and the fictional protagonist is usually the embodiment of the writer. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/15293 |
