Abstract: The chemistry of nine leafy and six thalloid liverworts, liverworts tissue culture and biotransformation of natural products with Mucor plumbeus were discussed.Marchantia papillata produced one novel sesquiterpenoid. Malaysian Dumortiera hirsuta produced two novel unstable sesquiterpenoids and two new bisbibenzyls whilst the axenic culture of D. hirsuta gave one new sesquiterpenoid along with two compounds that were also obtained from the wild material. Plagiochila blepharophora produced one novel bisbibenzyl. Chandonanthus hirtellus produced one new germacrane sesquiterpenoid, two new cembranes and five new dollabellane diterpenoids. Frullania tamarisci afforded one novel sesquiterpenoid dimer.Four axenic cultures (Marchantia polymorpha, Marchantia acaulis, Dumortiera hirsuta and Conocephalum conicum) were initiated. Three callus cultures (M. polymorpha, M. paleacea, M. acaulis and Trichocolea tomentella) were induced.Microbial transformation of (-)-ent-maalioxide gave one major novel metabolite; incubation of (-)-maaliol afforded two novel products; bioconversion of (-)-tamariscol produced O-methyltamariscol.
