Abstract: Disruption in urban rail transit system can severely affect passengers’ daily travel activities. Transit agencies and operators, besides providing reliable urban transit services and maintaining rail infrastructures, need to be concerned about developing effective and efficient disruption management strategies. This research study aims to investigate the nature of disruptions in an urban rail transit system and to evaluate the improvement in system performance in response to various disruption management strategies. A comprehensive study on the disruption modelling and management is presented based on the evaluation of system performance. On one hand, it provides infrastructure performance assessment on the network vulnerability and rail-bus transit network evaluation of resilience from the perspective of long-term planning of infrastructure management and system assessment. On the other hand, real-time disruption management strategies are discussed. A schedule-based transit assignment model is developed and a bi-level dynamic programming approach is proposed to solve the disruption management problem.
