Abstract: Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with the study of the growth of the craniofacial complex and hence the improvement on occlusion irregularities. Computer-aided orthodontics has become a popular research topic recently. In this study, a 3D visualization system is developed to facilitate orthodontics treatment planning. By taking various medical imaging techniques as data sources, the system is able to perform operations including model deformation, individual crown segmentation, root estimation, occlusion analysis, data registration, etc. Preliminary experiment results have shown that this system is able to recreate orthodontics data in a virtual environment where orthodontists can reliably conduct routines in treatment planning such as measurements and occlusion analysis. This system is part of the development of a virtual-human-head project, which has an ultimate goal of replacing the conventional orthodontics diagnosis and treatment planning process with computer simulations.
