Abstract: The author assessed the relationship between various types of working memory, especially verbal working memory, and visual attention. There were 3 groups, 6 different experiments, and we got both behavioral data and eye-moment data. In Experiment 3a and 3b, data showed that visual working memory had top-down control on the deployment of visual attention and subsequently affected visual search. Experiment 4a and 4b,data showed that visual verbal working memory had top-down control on the deployment of visual attention and subsequently affected visual search. Experiment 5a and 5b, data showed that auditory verbal working memory had top-down control on the deployment of visual attention and subsequently affected visual search. As in all the experiments, the targets of visual search are always grey and never contain the color that primes indicate, an interesting finding is that verbal primes can effectively and automatically capture visual attention, which means verbal working memory elicits similar effects to visual working memory.
