Abstract: In recent years, the ever-increasing demand for in situ monitoring of health, environment and food industry has created a need for reliable and miniaturized sensing devices. To achieve this, portable analytical devices are required. The main purpose of this Ph.D. work was to develop an in situ spectrophotometric solution for life sciences and healthcare applications. Firstly, we developed a personal analytical device, the Photopette, which is able to measure the light absorption and reflection of a substance. The Photopette can conduct light measurements anywhere, no longer limited to a fixed location such as in a lab environment. Secondly, the Photopette integrated with Lab in a Tip technology to demonstrate “one-step” analysis. Lastly, a novel spectrophotometric method for monitoring neonatal jaundice from sclera was proposed and validated.
